Acai Berries

Acai berries are gaining a reputation among today's informed consumers as one of nature's "superfoods". The number of people living longer and healthier lives has increased dramatically. This is due to not only advances in medicine, but also an increased awareness of the importance of eating foods rich in nutrients and vitamins. The Acai fruit, and the health benefits it provides, is getting a lot of attention from men and women who wish to stay healthy and active for many years.

The Acai is actually a palm tree whose native habitat is the Amazon rainforest. The berries it produces are dark purple and the size of grapes. Large clusters of over 500 berries hang from just one Acai palm branch. Native peoples have harvested these berries for centuries to treat a variety of diseases and ailments.

Free Radicals

The body's immune system naturally creates substances called free radicals to help fight off viruses and bacteria. However, the toxins in the environment, such as cigarette smoke, pollution and herbicides can stimulate the body to create excessive free radicals. These extra free radicals disrupt and damage normal cells and can accelerate the aging process. Wrinkles, diabetes, heart disease and cancers are just some of the damage that free radicals cause.

Antioxidants to the Rescue

Antioxidants are nature's way of helping the body to fight off the effects of free radicals. Found in many foods, antioxidants break and reduce the chain reaction of cell damage caused by free radicals. These Brazilian palm berries, which are exceptionally rich in antioxidants, are an excellent way to give the body the help it needs to counteract this cell damage.

ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It is measurement of a food's antioxidant value. ORAC values rate a food's ability to counteract the body's production of free radicals. The higher the ORAC value, the higher the ability of a food to fight off the damage caused by free radicals. Acai berry research has found that Acai berries have an ORAC value of 5,500, which far surpasses the next highest food, pomegranates, which rate 3,100 on the ORAC value scale.

Health Benefits

Those who consume Acai report a feeling of vitality, increased stamina and higher energy. The effects of the high levels of antioxidants in Acai promote good health. Consumers shopping for Acai products, however, are often unaware that not all Acai supplements and juices are the same. There have been proliferations of Acai scams on the Internet, which mislead unsuspecting buyers. Always view free trial offers with suspicion and be sure to buy Acai products from reputable sources.
